Poultry disease advice updated
New poster helps vets to treat pet birds

As small-scale poultry keeping becomes increasingly popular, the Animal Welfare Foundation (AWF) has updated its poultry disease advice to help small animal vets to treat backyard flocks.

A significantly updated poster has been put together to help small animal vets identify diseases in free-range birds, such as, exhibition chickens, hens, ducks, geese, turkeys, quail, guinea fowl, peacocks and ornamental pheasants and waterfowl.

Compiled by specialist poultry vet Victoria Roberts, the poster is intended as a quick reference guide for vets, with easy-to-follow lists of common problems found in particular species and age groups.

Advice is also offered on prevention, as well as the causes and signs of disease, and brief bio-security guidelines.

The poster is available on the AWF website and can be printed out for display in the practice (recommended size A3).
