BHWT to go ‘cupcake crazy’ for annual fundraiser
The British Hen Welfare Trust is calling on supporters old and new to get baking in the name of hen welfare.
Funds to help build UK’s first Happy Hen Care Home

Bakers and hen lovers alike are set to go ‘cupcake crazy’ for this year’s British Hen Welfare Day.

Taking place on Friday, 22 September, the British Hen Welfare Trust (BHWT) is calling on supporters old and new to get baking in the name of hen welfare.

The event falls during National Cupcake Week and people are being urged to whip up a batch of delicious cupcakes and share them with friends and family in exchange for a donation.

From red velvet to chocolate lemon to toffee - so long as the eggs used are free range, the rest is up to the baker!

“Being a baker I can’t wait to get in the kitchen and whip up a batch of cupcakes with eggs laid by my own hens. There’s nothing better than a cuppa alongside a piece of free range cake, especially when you’re raising money to help save lives at the same time,” said Francesca Taffs, BHWT’s marketing and communications officer.

“We’d love to see all our supporters up and down the country dusting off their aprons and getting into the free range spirit on British Hen Welfare Day.”

All proceeds raised from British Hen Welfare Day will be put towards building the UK’s first dedicated Happy Hen Care Home.

The charity would love those taking part in BHWD to share their photos on social media using the hashtag #BHWD2017. There will be a prize for the best cupcakes, so get creative!

RCVS annual renewal fee for vets due

RCVS' annual renewal fee for veterinary surgeons is now due. Vets must pay their renewal fee before Wednesday, 1 April 2026.

This year's standard annual fee has increased to 431 from last year's 418. This is an approximately three per cent increase, as approved by RCVS Council and the Privy Council.

Tshidi Gardner, RCVS treasurer, said: "The small fee increase will be used to help deliver both our everyday activities and our new ambitious Strategic Plan, which includes aims such as achieving new legislation, reviewing the Codes of Professional Conduct and supporting guidance, and continuing to support the professions through activities such as the Mind Matters Initiative, RCVS Academy and career development."

A full breakdown of the new fees is on the RCVS website. Information about tax relief is available on the UK government website.
