eBay Auction for Elephant Name
An eBay auction offering a chance to name the new baby elephant at ZSL Whipsnade Zoo has reached £1,061, with only one day left.

Zoo keepers stumped for a name for their latest arrival – a male calf born on April 12th – decided to auction the naming rights on the well known auction site to raise money for conservation.

Bidding started at just 1p but the honour of naming the two-week-old elephant will go to the highest bidder over the week-long auction, which finishes on Thursday. The winner will also get the chance to meet the elephant calf and his keepers at the zoo.

The auction of the baby’s name will raise funds for conservation work carried out by the Zoological Society of London (ZSL) which is the charity behind ZSL Whipsnade Zoo. There are thought to be just 1,500 Asian elephants remaining in the wild, with only 30,000 to 35,000 left in total. ZSL is working to protect elephants in the forest areas of Thailand, attempting to understand and alleviate the human-elephant conflict, which has been aggravated by the loss of the elephant’s natural habitat.
