BEVA Launches New PPE
Updated PPE launched at this year's BEVA Congress.

Today is the first day of the BEVA Congress 2011, which sees the launch of a revised equine pre-purchase examination certificate and new guidance notes which describe how a PPE is carried out. This is the first time the PPE has been reviewed in 25 years.

The five-stage PPE is an important procedure to inform prospective purchasers and help them make objective decisions about a horse they wish to purchase.

Malcolm Morley chaired the BEVA PPE Committee which oversaw the new documents. He explains: "The updated certificate has a similar format to the previous version, but now reflects modern practice and complies with recent RCVS guidance regarding examinations where the seller is a client of the examining veterinary surgeon."

The new documents 'BEVA/RCVS Guidance Notes on the Examination of a Horse on Behalf of a Prospective Purchaser' will be available in the public domain and have been written in plain English for ease of reference.

The new Certificate and Guidance Notes come into use today, the 8th September 2011. The old certificate will remain valid until February 2012. For more information, visit the BEVA website.

DAERA to reduce BVD 'grace period'

DAERA has reminded herd keepers of an upcoming reduction to the 'grace period' to avoid BVD herd restrictions.

From 1 May 2025, herd keepers will have seven days to cull any BVD positive or inconclusive animals to avoid restrictions being applied to their herd.

It follows legislation introduced on 1 February, as DAERA introduces herd movement restrictions through a phased approach. Herd keepers originally had 28 days to cull BVD positive or inconclusive animals.

DAERA says that, providing herd keepers use the seven-day grace period, no herds should be restricted within the first year of these measures.

Additional measures, which will target herds with animals over 30 days old that haven't been tested for BVD, will be introduced from 1 June 2025.

More information is available on the DAERA website.
