New Royal (Dick) School Facility Opens

The Princess Royal opens Edinburgh's Royal (Dick) School of Vet Studies new teaching facility.

Future students of the University of Edinburgh's Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies will benefit from the brand new £42 million teaching facility, which was opened yesterday by The Princess Royal.

More than 1000 staff and students can be accommodated at the new building, which is based next to the school's hospitals for small and large animals, enabling students to gain a range of practical experience. Lecture theatres with multi-media technology, a library, seminar rooms, teaching laboratories and a restaurant will all be available.

Furthermore, interactive models at a clinical skills facility will enable practical experience and a Second Life teaching initiative will enable students to visit a virtual equine treatment centre and discuss care for horses.

Professor Elaine Watson, Head of the Royal (Dick) School, pointed out that "the educational needs of the 21st century vet are very different to those of veterinary students of the past."

She added: "Teaching at the new vet school building will equip graduates with a wide range of expertise for a dynamic and growing profession which provides varied opportunities."

The building was officially opened by The Princess Royal, the Chancellor of the University and patron of the Vet School, on Tuesday 27th September 2011.
