Practice Manager of the Year deadline near
2011's winner Denise Coston
Nominations for 2012 Award must be in shortly

The final deadline for nominating candidates for the Practice Manager of the Year Awards is drawing closer and those who wish to see a practice manager recognised should submit their nomination as soon as possible. The final deadline is February 12th 2012.

This year's Award will be the seventh since the Award was founded by Petplan and the Veterinary Business Journal, and will form a distinguished component of Petplan's general Veterinary Awards ceremony. The winner will be chosen by a panel of industry judges who will base their decision on the applications submitted at the candidates' nomination. The standard of entrants is invariably high, and the winner will be announced alongside similarly recognised veterinary surgeons, nurses,  support staff, and practices as a whole. The ceremony will take place in Birmingham on April 12th 2012.

The ceremony is being held in association with the Veterinary Practice Managers Association (VPMA) and the Society of Practising Veterinary Surgeons (SPVS). The winner will receive a plaque to commemorate the award and a year's membership of the VPMA.

2011 winner Denise Coston, of Castle Veterinary Surgeons in County Durham, said of the award: "It is so important in recognising and championing the efforts of practice managers. I'm sure there will be many people out there who still don't know what we do or how we could benefit their business and this award highlights our achievements."

Application forms are also available on request from Jackie Morrison by email on jackiemorrison@vbd.uk.com, or by post at The Veterinary Business Journal, Olympus House, Werrington Centre, Peterborough PE4 6NA.

Practices urged to audit neutering data

News Story 1
RCVS Knowledge has called on vet practices to audit their post-operative neutering outcomes.

It follows the release of the 2024 NASAN benchmarking report, which collates data from neutering procedures performed on dogs, cats and rabbits.

The benchmarking report enables practices in the UK and Ireland to compare their post-operative outcomes to the national average. This includes the rate of patients lost to follow-up, which in 2024 increased to 23 per cent.

Anyone from the practice can submit the data using a free template. The deadline for next report is February 2026.

Visit the RCVS Knowledge website to complete an audit.

UK's BSE risk status downgraded

The WOAH has downgraded the UK's international risk status for BSE to 'negligible'.

Defra says that the UK's improved risk status recognises the reputation for having the highest standards for biosecurity. It adds that it demonstrates decades of rigorous animal control.

Outbreaks of Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy, also known as mad cow disease, have previously resulted in bans on Britain's beef exports.

The UK's new status could lead to expanded trade and better confidence in British beef.

Christine Middlemiss, the UK's chief veterinary officer, said: "WOAH's recognition of the UK as negligible risk for BSE is a significant milestone and is a testament to the UK's strong biosecurity measures and the hard work and vigilance of farmers and livestock keepers across the country who have all played their part in managing the spread of this disease.
