Scottish MEP awarded honorary membership of BVA
Scottish MEP Alyn Smith has been made an honorary associate member of the British Veterinary Association (BVA), in recognition of his long-standing commitment to animal welfare. He said: "Hopefully I'll be able to help the BVA explain its agenda to politicians and officials in Brussels in a useful way. I will also be able to give them feedback about what is going on, along with guidance and advice."

The final Kennel Club Question Time of 2012 takes place on Wednesday (21st November) at the Leicester Marriott Hotel, Enderby. Light refreshments will be available from 6.30pm and the session begins at 7pm prompt. The event is intended to give dog lovers the opportunity to air views and question senior representatives of the Kennel Club on any issue affecting dogs and dog owners. Brazil plans to clone endangered animals
Eight endangered animals, including jaguars and maned wolves, are to be cloned in Brazil in an attempt to help conservation. Brazil's agriculture research agency, Embrapa, and Brasilia Zoological Garden have been collecting tissue samples in order to clone the animals and keep them in captivity as a reserve. Other conservation groups have welcomed the plan, but say the priority is to preserve the species in the wild by minimising hunting and maintaining habitats.

AHVLA appoint new Country Director for Wales
The Animal Health and Veterinary Laboratories Agency (AHVLA) has announced Richard Bowen as its new Country Director for Wales. Richard will be responsible for all AHVLA activity in the country, in particular, ensuring that the agency is ready to deal with outbreaks of exotic animal disease. Prior to this, Richard worked at Director level in AHVLA for some time.

Small UK charity in need of help
Gambia Horse and Donkey Trust, a small UK charity that looks after working equines in west Africa, is fundraising to build a new housing barn. The charity's old barn was destroyed after excessive rainfall spread across Gambia. Anna Skillet, administrator for the trust, said: "The barn really is essential for the well-being of the animals in our care, some of whom are under close veterinary supervision." River Welland
The River Welland in Leicestershire will undergo a 500,000 conservation project funded by the Defra Catchment Restoration Fund. A team of scientists and volunteers will take part in the project aimed to lure back wildlife, such as kingfishers, to the area. Work will start on the conservation in the spring.

Young Kennel Club careers day
The fifth annual Young Kennel Club (YKC) careers day has taken place for 14 to 24 year olds that hope to pursue a career with dogs. The day involved experts such as a council dog warden, a dog behaviourist, a Guide Dogs recruitment consultant, trainers, PDSA vets, a vet nurse and a Blue Cross education officer. Dog behaviourist Mark Callis said: "It is important that tomorrow's leaders of the dog world are fully grounded and experienced and able to promote responsible dog ownership."

New reserve sees arrival of 18 pandas
Eighteen pandas have been released into a new wildlife reserve in China after an earthquake devastated their old one. The 8.0 magnitude earthquake forced the removal of giant pandas from their reservation in Sichuan province in 2008, and it has taken four years to build a brand new one. A conference, called Tortoise matters: improving standards for captive chelonians in the UK, will be taking place at Colchester Zoo on 17 November.
