DNA testing for Finnish lapphunds
7th August 2013
The Kennel Club has approved an official DNA testing scheme for glycogen storage disease type II (GSDII) - also known as Pompe's disease - in Finnish lapphunds. UK owners can contact Laboklin, who is offering the test, for more information. Test results will also be be sent directly to the Kennel Club, where they will be added to the dog's registration details and published in the next Breed Records Supplement.
RCVS welcomes 740 new graduates

This Summer, the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS) has welcomed 740 new UK graduates to its Register. The new registrations were made as part of graduation ceremonies at the seven veterinary schools in the UK. Newly inaugurated RCVS president, Neil Smith, said: "It's a great privilege to welcome these new graduates to the college." Vets take part in inter-practice charity tetrathlon

A team of eight equine vets are going head-to-head against a team of eight small animal vet colleagues to raise money for the children's cancer charity, CLIC Sargent. Vets at Abbey Equine Clinic, based in Abergavenny, south Wales, have organised a two-day sponsored tetrathlon that will include a 10k bike ride, a 400m swim, a 5k run and a Preliminary dressage test. On 9-10 August 2013, the two teams of veterinary staff, and a team of four veterinary sales representatives will compete in the challenge. Those wishing to sponsor the team can call 01873 840069.
Badger cull petition passes 250,000 signatures

With nearly 260,000 signatures, a petition against the impending badger cull in Gloucestershire and Somerset has become the most supported Number 10 petition. The e-petition was launched last autumn when it acquired 100,000 signatures in just two weeks, making it the fastest growing Number 10 petition at the time. Open season for the six-week badger cull began on June 1 and could be rolled out further across the country following the pilot.
Name a Hounds for Heroes puppy

Vet Charity Challenge is asking for girl or boy name suggestions for a Hounds for Heroes puppy. The name must have a military or emergency service connection. The opportunity to name a trainee puppy was given to Vet Charity Challenge after raising 21,000 between three charities last year - one of which being Hounds for Heroes. Names can be suggested via email or posted via the Vet Charity Challenge Facebook page.
Cosmetic testing on Animals banned in India

The drug controller general of India has announced that testing cosmetics and their ingredients on animals has been banned in the country - a decision that follows in the steps of the European Union and Israel. India's move has been celebrated by numerous animal rights campaigners, including the charity People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA).
BEVA offers clinical governance session

The British Equine Veterinary Association (BEVA) is running a two-day CPD workshop on clinical governance for vets and practice managers. The session will be held at Oakham Veterinary Hospital in Rutland on July 18 and 19 2013, and will be followed by downtime water sports on the nearby Rutland Water. The first day of the session will draw on experiences from the clinical audit support centre and RCVS practice standards scheme, while the second day will focus on the practicalities of the audit. Icelandic trip combines fishing with CPD

A CPD trip, taking place from Thursday 22 to Monday 26 August, will combine sessions on soft tissue surgery with salmon fishing in Iceland's River Midfjarda. The three days of 'Surgery and Salmon' will be run by private veterinary CPD providers Improve International. My cat app launched to reunite owners and pets

Petlog is celebrating National Microchipping Month with a new app to help reunite owners with their lost cats. The "my cat" app features a Lost Cat Alert, which allows owners to send an alert from their phone to rescue centres, vets and voluntary organisations within a 30 mile radius. The app became available to iPhone users from June 1 for a limited period.
Electronic pocket book launched for vets

Following the success of the Veterinary Benevolent Fund's (VBF) Pocket Book of Tips for Practising Vets, an electronic version has been launched. The electronic pocket book will be given to all final year veterinary students in the UK free of charge. In celebration of the launch, its two authors spoke to students at the Royal Veterinary College (RVC) about making a success of their first year in practice.
BEVA announces CPD programme

The British Equine Veterinary Association (BEVA) has announced that members will enjoy a 50 per cent reduction in fees for its CPD courses this year, due to some generous subsidies. Courses this year cover topics including modern equine dentistry, wound management and neck, back and pelvic problems in horses. See the BEVA CPD calendar for more.
Author calls for end to bullfighting

Author JM Coetzee has written to members of the Spanish Culture Committee, calling for current proposals to legalise bullfighting to be dropped. It is estimated that over 40,000 bulls are slaughtered each year during Spanish bullfights. The letter refers to proposals to give the practice legal protection as a "cultural pastime", which PETA have said would be a huge step backwards.
