Virtual panel to discuss the future of vet practices
The future of veterinary practices will discussed at a virtual event being held on Thursday, 27 April.

Rita Dingwall, FIVP business development manager, will be on the panel along with Malcolm Morley, BVA president, and Liz Barton from VetCT. They will explore the challenges and opportunities facing the veterinary industry and how to prepare for the future.

This keynote discussion is the first session in an afternoon of veterinary practice management talks to help owners and management staff who are currently facing a challenging environment.

Pet Blood Bank UK announces virtual fundraising challenge
Pet Blood Bank UK is asking veterinary professionals to join its virtual fundraising challenge, Around the Coast in 30 Days, by walking, running, swimming or cycling as many miles as they can.

Beginning on 1 May 2023, the charity is hoping those taking part can reach a collective target of 11,232 miles, the length of the UK mainland coastline.

BSAVA PetSavers launches fundraising campaign
BSAVA PetSavers has launched a new fundraising campaign called PetSavers in Practice, and is calling on UK veterinary practices to get involved.

A fundraising pack that includes ideas and tips, can be downloaded on the BSAVA website.

Fundraising coordinator Shelby Tunstall said: "We are really delighted to be launching this campaign which will help PetSavers fund more research projects for companion animals."

IVC offers to sell practices after CMA investigation
IVC Evidensia has responded to an investigation by the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) into the takeover of eight independent practices by offering to sell them.

The first phase of the investigation, completed in February, found concerns about competition in 23 local areas as a result of the takeovers. Concerns about the provision of out-of-hours emergency care for small animals and equine services were also identified.

The CMA has indicated that there are 'reasonable grounds' for believing that it might accept the offer.

Environment Secretary rules out reintroduction of lynx and wolves
During her address at the National Farmers Union (NFU) conference, Thérèse Coffey MP said that she will not support the reintroduction of wolves and lynx to the British countryside.

As MP for Suffolk Coastal, she witnessed first hand the conflict between conservation and the countryside, when a proposed reintroduction of the sea eagle caused concern with local farmers.

Coffey said: "I don't want farmers to constantly have to worry about these issues.

"We have got plenty to do with the habitats that need improving and expanding."

VMD and Swissmedic sign collaboration agreement
The UK's Veterinary Medicines Directorate (VMD) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Swissmedic, the Swiss authority for therapeutic products.

The two organisations have agreed to increase collaboration when reviewing authorisation applications for veterinary medicinal products.

Gavin Hall, deputy director of the VMD, said: "This is another exciting and important step in the UK developing valued relationships with global regulatory bodies. We are working in a global environment needing global solutions and harmonisation."

Dog owners sought for virtual walking challenge
Dog owners and walkers are being urged to sign up for the RSPCA's virtual dog walking challenge to help raise vital funds for the charity's rescuers.

It follows a shocking 25 per cent rise in abandonment cases and a 13 per cent rise in neglect incidents dealt with by the charity's rescue teams last year.

The My Big Walkies event takes place in March, and dog owners can pledge to either walk one mile a day or one hundred miles across the whole month. For more information and to sign up for the challenge, visit rspca.enthuse.com

Survey seeks professionals' views on pet health and welfare
Vets, vet nurses and students are being invited to have their say on what they think are the most significant welfare issues facing pets in the UK.

The PDSA Animal Wellbeing Report, now in its 13th year, assesses the state of the nation's pets, with more than 93,000 owners and veterinary professionals having completed the survey to date.

This year's report will focus on the impact of COVID-19 and the cost of living crisis and how such lifestyle changes continue to affect the UK's pets. The professional survey is available at yougov.com and will remain open until 10 February 2023.

Final call for RCVS Honours and Awards nominees
The Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS) is reminding members of the veterinary professions that the final date for submitting nominations to the 2023 RCVS Honours & Award is Friday, 27 January, at 5 pm.

The annual awards recognise individuals who have done their utmost for the benefit of animal health and welfare and the professions and society at large. Eight awards are up for grabs, including the Queen's Medal, the Veterinary Nursing Golden Jubilee Award and the RCVS Student Community Award.

RCVS to hold information session for prospective election candidates
The RCVS is holding a virtual session for anyone thinking of standing as a candidate in the 2023 RCVS Council or VN Council elections.

Taking place online on Tuesday 20 December, the event will see key members of the RCVS, including president Melissa Donald and Chair of VN Council Matthew Rendle give attendees an overview of what Council membership entails. Potential candidates will also have the opportunity to ask questions about the Councils or election process.

Vets call for 'I'm a Celeb' animal ban
Veterinary and animal welfare organisations are once again calling for a ban on live animals on ITV's 'I'm a Celebrity, Get Me Out of Here', as the show begins its 22nd series. The RSPCA is calling on supporters to contact ITV to ask producers to stop using living creatures in 'bushtucker trials', where the animals are often dropped, thrown, handled roughly, crushed, chased, overcrowded, prevented from escaping situations and scared by contestants.

The British Veterinary Association (BVA) has also launched a campaign called #GetAnimalsOutOfThere - highlighting veterinary surgeons' major concerns around the show's treatment of animals.

Professionals convene for UK's only ECC conference
The UK's only conference on emergency and critical care is happening in Leeds this week, with an expected turnout of 1,000 delegates from across the globe.

Taking place at the Royal Armouries, Leeds (3-4 November), visitors will be able to experience more than 80 hours of industry-leading CPD across seven streams, with talks from internationally-renowned experts and networking opportunities.

Speakers include Sren Boysen from the University of Calgary, Canada, and Victoria Gosling OBE, chief executive for GB Snowsport, who will deliver a keynote speech focusing on perseverance, resilience and teamwork.
